Study the following information carefully and answer the question given below: Point N is 8 m to the west of point O. Point P is 4 m to the south of point O. Point Q is 4 m to the east of point P. Point R is 6 m to the north of point Q. Point S is 8 m to the west of point R. Point T is 2 m to the south of point S. If point A is 4 m to the north of point Q, then what is the minimum distance between N and A?

  1. 16 m
  2. 8 m
  3. 12 m
  4. 10 m

Correct answer: 12 m

Solution

Taking O as the origin, N is at (-8,0). P is at (0,-4), so Q is at (4,-4), and A is 4 m north of Q, i.e. at (4,0). The distance between (-8,0) and (4,0) is 12 m.
