Point G is 8 m west of point C, which is 12 m north of point H. Point I is 6 m east of point H. Point K is 15 m west of point D, which is 18 m south of point G. Point E is 10 m west of point B and 27 m north of point K. Point F is 5 m north of point B. Point F is 20 m east of point A. What is the shortest distance between point I and point G?

  1. 18 m
  2. \u221a340 m
  3. \u221a288 m
  4. 12 m

Correct answer: \u221a340 m

Solution

Let H be at (0,0). Then C is at (0,12), so G is at (-8,12). Also, I is 6 m east of H, so I is at (6,0). The distance between I and G is \(\sqrt{(6-(-8))^2+(0-12)^2}=\sqrt{14^2+12^2}=\sqrt{340}\).
