Study the following information carefully and answer the question given below: Veer started walking from point M towards north for 7 km to reach point N. Then, he took a right turn and walked 5 km to reach point O. After that, he took a left turn and walked 8 km to reach point P. Then, he turned towards west and walked 9 km to reach point Q. From point Q, he walked 6 km south to reach point R. What is the shortest distance between point P and point N?

Correct answer: √89 Km

Solution

Take M as (0,0). Then N is at (0,7). Moving right from north means east, so O is at (5,7), and then left from east means north, so P is at (5,15). The distance between P(5,15) and N(0,7) is \(\sqrt{(5-0)^2+(15-7)^2}=\sqrt{25+64}=\sqrt{89}\).
