The primary winding of a transformer has 500 turns whereas its secondary has 5000 turns. The primary is connected to an A.C. supply of 20 V, 50 Hz. The secondary will have an output of

  1. 2 V, 5 Hz
  2. 200 V, 500 Hz
  3. 2 V, 50 Hz
  4. 200 V, 50 Hz

Correct answer: 200 V, 50 Hz

Solution

The voltage ratio in a transformer is proportional to the turns ratio. Since the secondary has 10 times the turns of the primary, the output voltage will be 10 times the input voltage, i.e., 200 V. The frequency remains unchanged at 50 Hz.
