For the series LCR circuit shown in the figure, what are the resonance angular frequency and the amplitude of the current at resonance?
- \(2500\ \text{rad s}^{-1}\) and \(2.5\ \text{A}\)
- \(2500\ \text{rad s}^{-1}\) and \(5\ \text{A}\)
- \(2500\ \text{rad s}^{-1}\) and \(2.5\ \text{A}\)
- \(25\ \text{rad s}^{-1}\) and \(2.5\ \text{A}\)
Correct answer: \(2500\ \text{rad s}^{-1}\) and \(5\ \text{A}\)
Solution
In a series LCR circuit, resonance occurs when \(X_L=X_C\), giving \(\omega_0=1/\sqrt{LC}\). At this frequency the impedance becomes minimum and equals \(R\), so the current amplitude is \(I_0=V/R\). Using the values from the figure gives \(\omega_0=2500\ \text{rad s}^{-1}\) and current amplitude \(5\) A.
