In the Kjeldahl’s method for estimation of nitrogen present in a soil sample, ammonia evolved from 0.75 g of sample neutralized 10 mL of 1 M H2SO4. The percentage of nitrogen in the soil is:
- 37.33
- 45.33
- 35.33
- 43.33
Correct answer: 35.33
Solution
In Kjeldahl's method, the moles of H2SO4 neutralized are 0.01 mol (10 mL × 1 M). Since 1 mol of H2SO4 reacts with 2 mol of NH3, the moles of NH3 are 0.02 mol. The mass of nitrogen is 0.02 × 14 = 0.28 g. The percentage of nitrogen is (0.28/0.75) × 100 = 35.33%.
