In the reaction 4 NH₃ (g) + 5 O₂ (g) → 4 NO(g) + 6 H₂O(l) When 1 mole of ammonia and 1 mole of O₂ are made to react to completion:
- 1.0 mole of H₂O is produced
- 1.0 mole of NO will be produced
- all the oxygen will be consumed
- all the ammonia will be consumed
Correct answer: all the oxygen will be consumed
Solution
The reaction is limited by the stoichiometric ratio of NH₃ to O₂, which is 4:5. Since only 1 mole of each reactant is present, O₂ is the limiting reagent, and all of it will be consumed before NH₃ is completely used up.
