ExamsJEE AdvancedMaths

Two finite sets A and B have m and n elements respectively. The total number of subsets of A exceeds the total number of subsets of B by 56. Find the value of m + n.

  1. 13
  2. 9
  3. 10
  4. 15

Correct answer: 9

Solution

2^m - 2ⁿ = 56. Factor out 2ⁿ: 2ⁿ*(2^(m-n)-1) = 56 = 8*7. Since 2^(m-n)-1 must be odd (= 7) and 2ⁿ = 8, we get n=3 and m-n=3 => m=6. So m+n = 9.
