Let A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and B = {2, 3, 6, 7}. Find the number of elements in (A x B) ∩ (B x A).

  1. 18
  2. 6
  3. 4
  4. 0

Correct answer: 4

Solution

A ∩ B = {2, 3}. The set (A x B) ∩ (B x A) consists of all pairs (x, y) where x and y both belong to A ∩ B = {2, 3}. The number of such pairs = |A ∩ B|² = 2² = 4.
