Two similar coils of radius R are lying concentrically with their planes at right angles to each other. The currents flowing in them are I₁ and I₂, respectively. The resultant magnetic field induction at the centre will be:

  1. √5μ₀I / (2R)
  2. 3μ₀I / (2R)
  3. μ₀I / (2R)
  4. μ₀I / R

Correct answer: √5μ₀I / (2R)

Solution

The magnetic field at the center of a circular coil is μ₀I / (2R). Since the two coils are perpendicular to each other, their magnetic fields are perpendicular and combine vectorially. Using Pythagoras' theorem, the resultant field is √[(μ₀I₁ / 2R)² + (μ₀I₂ / 2R)²] = √5μ₀I / (2R) when I₁ = I₂ = I.
