As per the diagram, a point charge +q is placed at the origin O. Work done in taking another point charge -Q from the point A [coordinates (0, a)] to another point B [coordinates (a, 0)] along the straight path AB is:
- (-qQ / 4πϵ₀) (1 / a²) √2a
- (-qQ / 4πϵ₀) (1 / a²)
- (qQ / 4πϵ₀) (a / √2)
- (qQ / 4πϵ₀) (1 / a²) √2a
Correct answer: (-qQ / 4πϵ₀) (1 / a²)
Solution
The work done in moving a charge in an electric field depends only on the initial and final positions, not on the path taken, as the electric field is conservative. The potential difference between points A and B is zero because they are equidistant from the origin (charge +q). Hence, the work done is zero.
