Two electric dipoles of moments $P$ and $64P$ are placed in opposite directions on a line at a distance of 25 cm. The electric field will be zero at a point between the dipoles whose distance from the dipole of moment $P$ is

  1. 5 cm
  2. 9.25 cm
  3. 10 cm
  4. 13.4 cm

Correct answer: 5 cm

Solution

Between opposite dipoles, the fields can cancel if their magnitudes are equal. Using the axial dipole field relation $E \propto p/r^3$, we get $P/x^3 = 64P/(25-x)^3$, which gives $25-x = 4x$ and hence $x = 5$ cm.
