A particle has a mass 400 times that of the electron and a charge twice that of an electron. It is accelerated through a potential difference of 5 V. If the particle was initially at rest, its final kinetic energy will be
- 5 eV
- 10 eV
- 100 eV
- 2000 eV
Correct answer: 10 eV
Solution
The gain in kinetic energy of a particle accelerated through a potential difference is $K=qV$. Here the charge is twice the electron charge, so $q=2e$. Therefore $K=2e\times 5\,\text{V}=10\,\text{eV}$. The mass does not affect the energy gained.
