The input resistance of a silicon transistor is 100 Ω. Base current is changed by 40 μA which results in a change in collector current by 2 mA. This transistor is used as a common emitter amplifier with a load resistance of 4 kΩ. The voltage gain of the amplifier is:
- 2000
- 3000
- 4000
- 1000
Correct answer: 4000
Solution
The current gain (β) of the transistor is given by β = ΔIc / ΔIb = 2 mA / 40 μA = 50. The voltage gain (Av) is given by β × (RL / Rin), where RL is the load resistance and Rin is the input resistance. Substituting the values, Av = 50 × (4000 / 100) = 50 × 40 = 2000.
