Bonding in which of the following diatomic molecule(s) become(s) stronger, on the basis of MO Theory, by removal of an electron? (A) NO (B) N2 (C) O2 (D) C2 (E) B2 Choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. (1) A, B, C only
  2. (2) B, C, E only
  3. (3) A, C only
  4. (4) D only

Correct answer: (3) A, C only

Solution

According to Molecular Orbital Theory, removing an electron from NO and O2 leads to a more stable configuration with a higher bond order, thus strengthening the bond. In contrast, the removal of an electron from N2 does not significantly affect its bond strength, as it already has a high bond order.
