Given below are two statements : Statement I : Both CaCl₂·6H₂O and MgCl₂·8H₂O undergo dehydration on heating. Statement II : BeO is amphoteric whereas the oxides of other elements in the same group are acidic. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Statement I is false but statement II is true
  2. Both statement I and statement II are false
  3. Both statement I and statement II are true
  4. Statement I is true but statement II is false

Correct answer: Statement I is false but statement II is true

Solution

Statement I is incorrect because while CaCl₂·6H₂O does undergo dehydration, MgCl₂·8H₂O typically does not lose all its water of crystallization upon heating. Statement II is accurate as BeO is indeed amphoteric, contrasting with the acidic nature of the oxides of other group elements.
