Given below are two statements: One is labelled as Assertion A and the other labelled as Reason R. Assertion A: Lithium halides are some what covalent in nature. Reason R: Lithium possess high polarisation capability. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below: (1) A is true but R is false (2) A is false but R is true (3) Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A (4) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

  1. A is true but R is false
  2. A is false but R is true
  3. Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
  4. Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

Correct answer: Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

Solution

Lithium halides have appreciable covalent character because the very small Li+ ion has high polarising capability, distorting the halide electron cloud (Fajans' rules). Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A (index 3).
