ExamsJEE MainChemistry

An organic compound A upon reacting with NH3 gives B. On heating, B gives C. C in presence of KOH reacts with Br2 to give CH3CH2CH2NH2. A is -

  1. CH3-CH(CH3)-COOH
  2. CH3CH2COOH
  3. CH3COOH
  4. CH3CH2CH2COOH

Correct answer: CH3CH2CH2COOH

Solution

Propylamine CH3CH2CH2NH2 (3 carbons) comes from the Hofmann degradation of a 4-carbon amide. So C = CH3CH2CH2CONH2, B is the same amide, and A = CH3CH2CH2COOH (butanoic acid), which forms the amide with NH3.
