Which of the following solutions has the greater molar conductivity? (i) A 0.08 M solution whose specific (electrolytic) conductivity is 2 x 10⁻² ohm⁻¹ cm⁻¹. (ii) A 0.1 M solution whose resistivity is 50 ohm cm.
- (i)
- (ii)
- Both (i) and (ii)
- Cannot be determined
Correct answer: (i)
Solution
For (i): kappa = 2x10⁻² ohm⁻¹ cm⁻¹, C = 0.08 M -> molar conductivity = kappa*1000/C = (2x10⁻² * 1000)/0.08 = 250 ohm⁻¹ cm² mol⁻¹. For (ii): kappa = 1/rho = 1/50 = 2x10⁻² ohm⁻¹ cm⁻¹, C = 0.1 M -> molar conductivity = (2x10⁻² * 1000)/0.1 = 200 ohm⁻¹ cm² mol⁻¹. Since 250 > 200, solution (i) has the greater molar conductivity.
