Arrange LiCl, NaCl and KCl in the correct order of their equivalent (molar) conductance at infinite dilution.
- LiCl > NaCl > KCl
- KCl > NaCl > LiCl
- NaCl > KCl > LiCl
- LiCl > KCl > NaCl
Correct answer: KCl > NaCl > LiCl
Solution
At infinite dilution the chloride contribution is the same for all three. The difference lies in cation mobility. Although Li+ has the smallest crystal radius, it has the largest hydrated radius (most heavily hydrated), so it moves slowest. K+ is least hydrated and moves fastest. Hence conductance order is KCl > NaCl > LiCl.
