A gas X at 1 atm is bubbled through a solution that contains 1 M Y and 1 M Z at 25°C. If the reduction potentials follow the order Z > Y > X, which of the following correctly describes the redox behaviour of Y?

  1. Y will oxidise X but not Z
  2. Y will oxidise both Z and X
  3. Y will reduce both X and Z
  4. Y will oxidise Z and reduce X

Correct answer: Y will oxidise X but not Z

Solution

Higher reduction potential means a stronger tendency to get reduced, i.e. to act as an oxidising agent. Since E°(Y) > E°(X), Y can oxidise X. Since E°(Z) > E°(Y), Z is the stronger oxidiser, so Y cannot oxidise Z (instead Z would oxidise Y). Hence Y oxidises only X.
