A current of 3.7 A is passed for 6 hours between nickel electrodes in 0.5 L of a 2 M solution of Ni(NO3)2. What will be the molarity of the solution at the end of electrolysis?

  1. 1.0 M
  2. 1.5 M
  3. 2.0 M
  4. 2.5 M

Correct answer: 2.0 M

Solution

Since both electrodes are nickel, the anode dissolves releasing as many Ni²+ ions as the cathode deposits, keeping the net concentration of the Ni(NO3)2 solution unchanged at 2.0 M.
