A 50 mL sample of 0.1 M CuSO4 solution is electrolyzed using a current of 0.965 A for 200 seconds. The electrode reactions are: Cathode: Cu²+ + 2e⁻ -> Cu(s); Anode: 2H2O -> O2 + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻. Assuming no change in volume, what is the molar concentration of SO4²- ions at the end of the electrolysis?

  1. 0.05 M
  2. 0.08 M
  3. 0.10 M
  4. 0.12 M

Correct answer: 0.10 M

Solution

SO4²- ions are not discharged at either electrode during the electrolysis of CuSO4; only Cu²+ is deposited at the cathode and water is oxidized at the anode. Therefore the amount of SO4²- stays constant at 0.005 mol in 50 mL, giving a concentration of 0.10 M.
