Two friends A and B are playing in a park. After some time, A went to his home and B went to his office. A walked 8 m towards north from the park and turned right and walked 8 m, then took a right turn and walked 8 m to reach a point. Then he started walking in the north-east direction and covered a distance of 13 m, then started walking south and covered a distance of 12 m to reach the bus stand, and finally turned left and walked 6 m to reach home. What is the shortest distance between the home and the bus stand?
- 5 m
- 25 m
- 9 m
- 7 m
Correct answer: 9 m
Solution
By tracing the path, the bus stand and home end up at two points whose coordinate difference gives the shortest distance. The resulting separation is 9 m.
