In each of these questions, two equations (I) and (II) are given. Solve the equations and mark the correct option. I: \(2x^2 + 10x + 12 = 0\) II: \(y^2 + 10y + 25 = 0\)

Correct answer: If x > y

Solution

Equation I factors as \(2(x+2)(x+3)=0\), so \(x=-2\) or \(x=-3\). Equation II factors as \((y+5)^2=0\), so \(y=-5\). In both possible cases, \(x>-5\), so \(x>y\).
