The marked price of a shirt and a trouser are in the ratio 1:2. The shopkeeper gives 40% discount on the shirt. If the total discount on both the shirt and the trouser is 30%, what is the discount offered on the trouser?

Correct answer: 25%

Solution

Let the marked prices be 1x and 2x. Discount on shirt = 40% of x = 0.4x, and total discount = 30% of 3x = 0.9x. So discount on trouser = 0.9x - 0.4x = 0.5x, which is 25% of 2x.
