There are eight bags of rice looking alike, seven of which have equal weight and one is slightly heavier. The weighing balance has unlimited capacity. Using this balance, the minimum number of weighings required to identify the heavier bag is

Solution
Weigh three bags against three bags. If one side is heavier, the heavier bag is among those three; otherwise it is among the remaining two. A second weighing then identifies the heavier bag.
