The average age of a mother together with her six children is 12 years. When the mother's age is left out, the average drops by 5 years. What is the mother's age (in years)?

Solution

Seven people average 12, so their total is 84. The six children average 12-5=7, totalling 42. The mother's age is 84-42=42 years.
