Two motorcycles, M and N, start from points 480 km apart. They travel at constant speeds. If they move towards each other, they meet in 5 hours. If they move in the same direction, they meet in 15 hours. What is the speed of motorcycle M? (Assume M is the faster motorcycle)
- 55 km/h
- 64 km/h
- 70 km/h
- 80 km/h
Correct answer: 64 km/h
Solution
When they move towards each other, the sum of speeds is 480/5 = 96 km/h. When they move in the same direction, the difference of speeds is 480/15 = 32 km/h. Solving M + N = 96 and M - N = 32 gives M = 64 km/h.
