A person travels between two towns. At 60 km/h, he arrives 1.5 hours early. At 40 km/h, he arrives 1 hour late. What is the distance between the towns?

1. 300 km

Correct answer: 300 km

Solution

Let distance be d and scheduled time be t. Then d/60 = t - 1.5 and d/40 = t + 1. Subtracting gives d/40 - d/60 = 2.5, so d/120 = 2.5 and d = 300 km.
