The population of a town increases by 5% annually. If the current population is 44,100, what was it two years ago (approximately)?
- 40,000
- 41,000
- 42,000
- 43,000
Correct answer: 40,000
Solution
If the population grows by 5% per year, then after two years it becomes multiplied by $1.05^2=1.1025$. So the population two years ago was $44100/1.1025=40000$.
