Two numbers P and Q are such that 3% of P added to 6% of Q equals four-fifths of the sum of 4% of P and 6% of Q. What is the ratio of (P + Q) to (P - Q)?
- 5 : 6
- 7 : 5
- 4 : 5
- 6 : 5
Correct answer: 7 : 5
Solution
From 0.03P + 0.06Q = (4/5)(0.04P + 0.06Q): multiply both sides by 100: 3P + 6Q = 3.2P + 4.8Q => 1.2Q = 0.2P => P/Q = 6. So P = 6Q. Then (P+Q):(P-Q) = 7Q:5Q = 7:5.
