In triangle PQR, the bisector of angle QPR meets side QR at point S. If QS = 8 and QR = 18, find the ratio PQ : PR.

Correct answer: 4 : 5

Solution

By the Angle Bisector Theorem, QS/SR = PQ/PR. QR = 18, QS = 8, so SR = 18 - 8 = 10. Therefore PQ/PR = QS/SR = 8/10 = 4:5. In the original question: BD=6, BC=14, DC=8, AB/AC = BD/DC = 6/8 = 3:4.
