A boat covers a fixed distance against the current in 9 hours 36 minutes, and covers the same distance with the current in 6 hours. What is the ratio of the boat's speed in still water to the speed of the current?

Correct answer: 13 : 3

Solution

With upstream time 9.6 h and downstream time 6 h, if distance = D, then upstream speed = D/9.6 and downstream speed = D/6. Still-water speed proportional to (1/9.6 + 1/6)/2 = 13/48; current speed proportional to (1/6 - 1/9.6)/2 = 3/48. Ratio = 13:3.
