The ratio of the outer circumference to the inner circumference of a circular path is 5 : 4. If the path is 50 metres wide, what is the radius of the inner circle?

1. 250 metres

Correct answer: 200 metres

Solution

Circumference is proportional to radius, so R/r = 5/4. Let R = 5k, r = 4k. Width = R – r = k = 50 m. Therefore r = 4 × 50 = 200 m.
