ExamsSSC CGL (Prelims)General

Two years ago, the age of Y was three times the age of X. After 6 years, the ratio of Y's age to X's age will be 2 : 1. What is the sum of their current ages?

  1. 17
  2. 15
  3. 21
  4. 30

Correct answer: 17

Solution

One year ago, B's age = 2 x A's age; after 9 years, B:A = 4:3. Let A now = a, B now = b. Equations: b - 1 = 2(a - 1) and (b + 9)/(a + 9) = 4/3. Solving: b = 2a - 1; 3(b + 9) = 4(a + 9) -> 3(2a - 1) + 27 = 4a + 36 -> 6a + 24 = 4a + 36 -> a = 6, b = 11. Sum = 17.
