A box contains y yellow and b blue marbles. 18% of the yellow marbles plus 24% of the blue marbles total 30. Three times the number of yellow marbles exceeds twice the number of blue marbles by 200. What is the ratio of y^2 to b^2?

Correct answer: 4 : 1

Solution

From the two equations: 3y+4b=500 and 3y-2b=200. Subtracting gives 6b=300 so b=50, then y=100. y^2:b^2 = 10000:2500 = 4:1.
