A motorboat takes 18 hours to travel a certain distance downstream and 36 hours to cover the same distance upstream. What is the ratio of the boat's speed in still water to the speed of the current?

Correct answer: 3 : 1

Solution

Downstream speed = D/18, upstream speed = D/36. Speed of boat in still water = (D/18 + D/36)/2 = (3D/36)/2 = D/24. Speed of stream = (D/18 - D/36)/2 = (D/36)/2 = D/72. Ratio = (D/24):(D/72) = 72:24 = 3:1.
