In triangle ABC, the line DE is drawn parallel to BC with D on AB and E on AC. If AD : DB = 1 : 2 and AE measures 5 cm, what is the length of EC?

Correct answer: 10 cm

Solution

Since DE is parallel to BC, the Basic Proportionality Theorem gives AE/EC = AD/DB = 1/2. With AE = 5, EC must be twice that, i.e. 10 cm.
