A hollow rectangular box (parallelepiped) has outer dimensions 12 cm x 10 cm x 8 cm and a uniform wall thickness of 1 cm. Find the volume of material in the box.

Solution

Outer volume = 12x10x8 = 960. Inner dimensions = (12-2)x(10-2)x(8-2) = 10x8x6 = 480. Material volume = 960 - 480 = 480 cm^3.
