Two quantities are in the ratio 5 : 7. When 9 is added to both, their ratio changes to 8 : 11. Find the two original quantities.

Solution

Taking the numbers as 5x and 7x, the condition (5x+9)/(7x+9) = 8/11 gives 55x+99 = 56x+72, so x = 27. The original numbers are 5*27 = 135 and 7*27 = 189.
