A regular hexagonal nut has an outer side of 6 cm and a hollow inner hexagonal hole of side 3 cm. What is the approximate cross-sectional area of the material (the metal part)?
- 60 cm^2
- 70 cm^2
- 56 cm^2
- 66 cm^2
Correct answer: 70 cm^2
Solution
Material area = outer hexagon area - inner hexagon area = (3*sqrt(3)/2)(6^2 - 3^2) = (3*sqrt(3)/2)(27) = 40.5*sqrt(3) which is about 70.1 cm^2. So the closest value is 70 cm^2.
