A 60-litre mixture of milk and water has milk to water in the ratio 7 : 5. How many litres of water should be added so that the new ratio of milk to water becomes 7 : 8?

Solution

From the 7:5 split of 60 L, milk = 35 L and water = 25 L. Keeping milk fixed and adding x litres of water: 35/(25+x) = 7/8, giving 25 + x = 40, so x = 15 L.
