Two cyclists have speeds in the ratio 4 : 3. The slower one, riding at 18 km/h, starts with a 15 km lead. What distance (in km) must the faster cyclist cover to catch up with him?
- 50 km
- 60 km
- 75 km
- 90 km
Correct answer: 60 km
Solution
The slower cyclist's 18 km/h corresponds to 3 parts, so 1 part = 6 and the faster cyclist (4 parts) does 24 km/h. Closing the 15 km gap at a relative 6 km/h takes 2.5 h, during which the faster cyclist travels 24 × 2.5 = 60 km.
