Three numbers are in the ratio 3 : 5 : 7 and their average is 60. Find the difference between the greatest and the least of the three numbers.

Correct answer: 48

Solution

From the average, the sum is 180, so 15x = 180 giving x = 12. The numbers are 36, 60, 84, and the difference between largest and smallest is 84 − 36 = 48.
