A solid cylinder of radius 6 cm and height 14 cm has a coaxial cylindrical hole of radius 2 cm drilled straight through its full length. Taking pi = 22/7, what is the volume of the solid that remains?
- 1500 cm^3
- 1408 cm^3
- 1300 cm^3
- 1208 cm^3
Correct answer: 1408 cm^3
Solution
The leftover solid is the outer cylinder minus the cylindrical hole. Using pi*h*(R^2 - r^2) = (22/7)*14*(36 - 4) = 22*2*32 = 1408 cm^3.
