A solid metal sphere of radius R is melted down and reshaped into n identical small spheres, each of radius r. What is the value of n?

Correct answer: R^3 / r^3

Solution

Total volume stays constant, so (4/3)piR^3 = n x (4/3)pir^3. Cancelling the common factor gives n = R^3/r^3. The answer is therefore R^3/r^3.
