A solid metal cylinder of radius 6 cm and height 14 cm has a cylindrical hole of radius 2 cm bored through its centre along the axis. Find the volume of the metal that remains. (Use pi = 22/7)
- 1408 cm^3
- 1232 cm^3
- 1540 cm^3
- 1760 cm^3
Correct answer: 1408 cm^3
Solution
The remaining metal is the outer cylinder minus the bored hole: pi x (R^2 - r^2) x h = (22/7)(36 - 4)(14). This equals (22/7) x 32 x 14 = 1408 cm^3.
