A solid is built from 4 stacked prism layers, each with an equilateral triangular cross-section of side 8 cm. The first layer is 3 cm tall and every layer above is 2 cm taller than the one below. Find the total volume of the solid. (Take sqrt(3) = 1.732)

Solution

The four heights form 3, 5, 7, 9 cm, totalling 24 cm. The equilateral base area is (sqrt(3)/4)*64 = 16*1.732 = 27.712 cm^2. Volume = 27.712 * 24 = 665.088 cm^3.
