Two vessels of the same volume each hold a juice-and-water mixture. In the first the juice to water ratio is 4 : 1, and in the second it is 1 : 4. If both mixtures are poured together, what is the resulting ratio of juice to water?
- 1:1
- 2:3
- 5:2
- 4:1
Correct answer: 1:1
Solution
Treating each equal vessel as 5 parts, the first gives 4 juice + 1 water and the second gives 1 juice + 4 water. Totals are 5 juice and 5 water, so the combined ratio is 1 : 1.
